The Mombasa Kilindini Community Forest Association (MOKICFA) unites over 20 community-based organizations working together for the sustainable management and restoration of Mombasa's vital coastal mangrove ecosystems.
MOKICFA was formed in 2008 and formally registered in August 2012 under the Societies Act (Cap. 108). We bring together over 20 Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and user groups from across Mombasa County.
In collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), we work under the Forest Conservation and Management Act, No. 34 of 2016, managing 4,233 hectares of mangrove forest โ a vital ecosystem that protects coastlines, supports fisheries, and sequesters carbon.

From planting seedlings to empowering communities, our work spans the full spectrum of sustainable forest management.
We plant and nurture native mangrove species โ including Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal โ to rehabilitate degraded coastal zones across Mombasa County.
We equip local user groups โ beekeepers, fisherfolk, eco-tourism groups, and seedling producers โ with the skills and resources needed to sustainably manage forest resources.
Using GPS mapping and field surveys, we track the health and growth of planted areas, ensuring accountability and evidence-based management decisions.
Our work creates sustainable income streams for communities through nursery management, eco-tourism, beekeeping, and sustainable fisheries practices.
We collaborate with KRA, KFS, and government bodies to align community efforts with national conservation goals, including the 15 Billion Trees strategy.
We raise awareness about the ecological and economic value of mangroves โ advocating for stronger protections and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
In partnership with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), MOKICFA successfully planted 65,000 mangrove seedlings across three key sites in Mombasa County between November and December 2024 โ surpassing the initial target of 60,000 seedlings.
